Covering an area of 15.5 km, the clean and serene beauty of the dal lake is the pride and joy of Sr... rinagar. It is not a single lake but a combination of lakes with four basins. The lake is tasseled with Shankaracharya hill , Houseboats, Shikaras, Floating gardens, Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Hari Parbat, etc… It provides a quaint picture of mughal gardens for the tourists, photographers and families.

The snow capped mountains with colorful royal houseboats welcomes us from afar. Floating Gardens
The floating gardens known as “Rad” in Kashmiri language are the splotches of lotuses and lilies bloomed on the water. It is a thick growth of vegetation which are cut to float upon the water. The flowers of vibrant colors pleases our eyes. The weeds pulled out of the lake serves as a compost to the gardens and also keeps the lake clean.

Shalimar Bagh
The garden was constructed by the Mughals with a outer garden in the first terrace with a marble fountain and a inner garden as the private hall for the court guests with pools and 410 fountains. The third terrace is the water channel through the Zenana garden with Char Chinar which are four trees on an island and Bardari which is a hall with 12 doors allowing a good flow of air made out of black marble.

Nagin Lake
The Nagin Lake can be reached through a causeway only through bikes or by walk to enter the premises and enjoy the views. It is surrounded by Sankarachariyar hills, Hari Parbat and Zabarwan Hills.

Chashme Shahi
The Chashme shahi is a garden with plants of medicinal properties that is classified into an aqueduct, waterfalls and fountains. The water flows on the platform and drops over 5 meters to reach the chute. There is small shrine called Chasma Sahibi located in the garden and also houses a fresh water spring.

Hari Parbat
The Hari Parbat is a fort built on a hill overlooking the lake and the city. It was first constructed by Emperor Akbar who built the outer wall, but the idea of new capital didn’t become a success. Later, the fort attained its current state in 1808. It provides a wide eye view of the entire lake.

The concept of houseboats in Dal Lake was first introduced by the Britishers when it was their summer retreat. The canopied Shikaras which can be called as the Indian Gondolas takes the tourists to the luxurious houseboats that are embellished with handiworks of the artisans. These boats lies at western side of the lake in lakeside promenades. The houseboats can be rendered as the cultural symbol of Srinagar. They are run by the locals of Kashmir as a commercial business. The houseboats are made of cedar woods and commonly known as “floating palaces” have fully furnished rooms, verandas and a sun-deck . There is also a place called kitchenboat that provides residence for the cook and two boats can be interconnected via a plank serving as a bridge. They vary from a small standard ones to posh royal suites with jacuzzis bedecked with kashmiri carpets, lavish furnitures and ornate chandeliers. We can also have a homestyle cooked kashmiri meal in the houseboat while enjoying the stunning sunset from the decks.

The Dal lake were always welcoming the tourists from Mughals and British period during the summers. The Mughals built the Shalimar and Nishat Bagh which provides a tranquil view of the lake. It can be quoted as “paradise on earth” for its grandeur beauty.

The Scenic Srinagar can be reached from the Jammu Tawi or Udhampur railway station which are well connected from all parts of India. We can hire a cab or a private vehicle and reach this splendid destination for a good rejuvenation.
